Hungary vs Iceland – Preview

Written by Tomasz Mortimer

Tonight Hungary host Iceland in preparation for two crucial Euro 2012 qualifiers in September.

After coming off the back of two wins from the last international date, Hungary will be looking to carry on that momentum in preparation for Sweden on September 9th.

Egervari will continue with a 4-2-3-1, which indicates he will play the same formation vs the Swedes in Budapest.

The surprise selection is Jozsef Varga at right back who has never featured there for his country, and rarely plays there for his club. Egervari has obviously seen something he likes about the 22 year old, and with troubles in defence being a constant problem, the Debrecen man could be the solution.

Another change in defence is Zsolt Korcsmar who will receive his first cap tonight playing alongside Zoltán Lipták. Korcsmar has been in superb form for Brann this season, and you can read more about him here. Laczko will continue at left back with Adam Bogdán starting in between the sticks.

There is no shocks in terms of Egervari’s selection in midfield with Vladimir Koman replacing the injured Zoltán Gera on the right wing.

Gergely Rudolf will start on his own up front, which leave the Genoa forward isolated at times. Rudolf is much better playing off another striker, rather than on his own and that was proven home and away vs Holland where he performed much better in Amsterdam alongside Tamas Priskin. It will be interesting to see how Rudolf adapts tonight.

Iceland will provide stern opposition with classy players like Eidur Gudjohnson and Gylfi Sigurdsson likely to cause a problem to the Hungarian defence.

Unlike Hungary, Iceland come off two poor results; losing to Denmark at home 2-0 in June and drawing to Cyprus 0-0 in March and currently sit bottom of their group with just one point from 5 games.

Hungary will definitely be favourites tonight, but Iceland do have quality that Hungary have to be aware of and they shouldn’t be underestimated.

Prediction: Hungary 2-1 Iceland

Hungary Starting XI: Bogdán – Varga J., Lipták, Korcsmár, Laczkó – Elek, Vadócz – Koman, Hajnal, Dzsudzsák – Rudolf
