Introduction

Balázs Berke was born in Nagykanizsa on 20th February 1984. Prior to becoming a professional referee he was a civil servant. Mr Berke was originally placed on the NB1 list for the 2011/2012 season and the autumn half of season 2012/13, during that time he refereed 11 NB1 matches after making his NB1 debut as a referee on 30th July 2011 in the match between BFC Siófok v Újpest. He primarily officiated in the NB2 and is listed from Feb 2013 as an NB2 referee. He returned to the NB1 officially on 1st July 2017 on a professional contract.

Meet the Referee: István Vad II

Name: István Vad II

Introduction

István Vad was born in Budapest on 30th May 1975. He comes from a long line of referees, his Grandfather took up refereeing after his playing career ended and officiated at county level, his grandfather was followed by his father who refereed domestic top flight games as well as being on the FIFA list. His father was also an accomplished player for Ferencváros before taking up the whistle. More recently he has been joined by his sister Anita who officiates in the women's game and has been a FIFA listed assistant referee since 2017.

Mr Vad played football himself as a youngster and at one time was part of the Ferencváros academy. He also played for Rákosmenti TK and Budapest VSC before taking up the whistle in 1995. He received his FIFA badge in 2007 and is currently a category 1 referee.  He was a part of Kassai's team at the Euro's in 2016, where he was unfortunately responsible for the error that saw the team being sent home from the tournament, after he failed to spot the ball crossing the line for Ukraine in their match v England. On 01.07.13 he became one of Hungary’s first 12 professional referees.

Meet the Referee: Bognár Tamás

Introduction

Tamás Bognar was born in Sárvár on 18th November 1978. He passed the referee exam in 1995 and worked his way up the leagues before making his debut in the NB2 in 2002. After 4 years in the NB2 he made his NB1 debut in 2006. On 01.07.13 he became one of Hungary's first 12 professional referees.

He received his FIFA badge in 2009 and just 1 year later was promoted to category 2. He was promoted again in January 2015 to category 1 where he continues to impress. As well as refereeing in both the Champions League and Europa League he is also the number 1 AAR to Viktor Kassai and was a part of Kassai's team at the Euro's in 2016.

Meet the Referee: Kassai Viktor

Name: Kassai Viktor

Date of Birth: 1975-09-10

Introduction

Viktor Kassai was born on 10th September 1975 in Tatabanya, Hungary. As a young boy he played football in various age groups for Tatabanya, before taking up the whistle at age 14. Having passed his referee course in 1990 he made his debut as an Assistant Referee in June 1990 in the Hungarian Youth Leagues in a game between Szárliget v Obarok. 16 months later, in October 1991, he made his debut as a referee in the Hungarian Youth League in a match between Kecskéd v Vértessomló.

He continued refereeing in the Hungarian Youth Leagues before finally making his debut on 11.04.93, at the age of 17, in the mens league in a match between Ászár v Császár. At just 19 years old, he began refereeing in the Hungarian professional leagues where he refereed in the NB3. His debut on the NB1, Hungary's top division came on the 20.03.99 in a match between Zalaegerszeg v BVSC.

His commitment, hard work and natural talent for refereeing brought him to the attention of UEFA. He made his International debut on 24.10.2000 in the UEFA Regions Cup, while in the UEFA talent group. The match was between Plovdiv Province Bulgaria v Eastern Slovakia. He was promoted to the FIFA list of referees on 01.01.03, where he currently remains as one of the 27 UEFA elite list referees. On 01.07.13 he became one of Hungary's first 12 professional referees.
