Hungarian Teams in Europe – Europa League Preview

Videoton and Honved both face Montenegrin opposition this Thursday as they square off against Mladost Podgorica and Celic Niksic in the first qualifying round of the Europa League.

The two Hungarian sides will be favourites for the tie, but both game’s will be tougher than one might expect in the first round of qualifying.

After Videoton’s foray into the Europa League group stage last season, they’ll be wanting to start well. Their talented squad will be yearning for more of the same this season, and Istvan Kovacs will be one to look out for Vidi. He’ll be wanting to perform well in Europe this season to put himself in the shop window for a big money move to a top European League.

Honved were also in Europe last season, but were knocked out in the 2nd qualifying round after drawing Russian moneybags, Anzhi Makhachkala. Unfortunately, for Kispest, they have lost their two most influential players in Leandro Martinez and Davide Lanzafame from last term. They’ve replaced them with two more Italians in Emanuele Testardi and Andrea Mancini, but it’ll be interesting to see how they adapt. You still imagine them to get through this tie.

Little is know about our Montenegrin opposition, but thankfully Urednik from the Montenegrin football website, was kind enough to talk to us ahead of the tie, firstly about Videoton’s opponents:

Mladoast have a squad that struggled to remain in the top tier until the last week of play last season.
They qualified for EL only because Buducnost and Grbalj didn't get the license for European
competition from our FA. On the pitch they didn't deserved to play Euro games.
Mladost changed the coach. Nikola Rakojevic is now theer coach and he is regarded
as one of the best in our country. Drasko Bozovic was key player of the squad
but he left 10 days ago for Domzale in Slovenia. Sanibal Orahovac who
played for Red Star, Karsruher, Aue, Wehen and Frankfurt is the strongest
player the others are very average.

Then about Honved’s opponents:

Celik is stronger squad they have won our Cup in season 2011/12 and played
final last season. They have few good players Darko Zoric (MF) one of the
most talented players in our league, Ilija Radović (DF), Stevan Račić (FW).

Asked who he thinks will progress, Urednik replied:

I think your teams are better. Especially Videoton, there is big gap
between Videoton and Mladost. Celik need to get good result in first game
(1-0, 2-0) and than it will be interesting to see the away game. If Honved
scores it will be tough for our side. Summary, if one of our teams
eliminate your team it is going to be big surprise for me.
