FC Basel vs Videoton – Preview

KICK OFF: 21:05 (CET)

Videoton travel to Switzerland today knowing that a victory will almost guarantee their passage to the round of 32.

After impressive back-to-back wins over Sporting and Basel at home, Vidi are in great form in their first Europa League campaign, meanwhile Basel have not won in their last six European fixtures.

The two sides met just two weeks ago with Videoton claiming an impressive 2-1 victory in Szekesefehervar. The win lifted them four points ahead of their Swiss counterparts, with three games remaining.

Even after controlling possession for large periods of the game, Basel were left frustrated by a strong Videoton defence which only really allowed two real chances on goal.

Their style was in sharp contrast to the Hungarian’s who liked to sit back and hit the Swiss on the break. The pace of Adam Gyurcso and Walter Lee really frightened the Basel defence, and it’s likely to be Sousa’s ploy again tonight.

The starting eleven will probably be the same as a fortnight ago with Filipe Oliviera coming in for Gyurcso on the left wing.

Vidi have failed to find the net in five of their last seven away matches in Europe which will give Basel plenty of optimism heading into this must-win game, and Paulo Sousa is expecting a backlash.

“Since the coaching change, the team played with a lot more motivation and increased the intensity,” Sousa said in his pre-match press conference. “The club has a lot of experience at this level, and last year they returned to big things.”

Basel are likely to lineup with the same side that started in their 2-0 win over Young Boys at the weekend with Alexander Frei returning from suspension, and manager Murat Yakin is expecting a tough game.

“I feel that we will have a similar percentage of possession as we did in Szekesfehervar, but we will need to score from the chances we create,” said Yakin. “I am also well aware that Videoton FC defend very well, and they hit teams with quick counter attacks. We have prepared for their type of game.”

Prediction: Basel 2-0 Videoton
