It was a mixed night for the Hungarians in the Europa League last night as Honved found the power of Anzhi too much to conquer, while Videoton progressed on away goals vs Slovan
Honved 0-4 Anzhi (Agg: 0-5)
It was always going to be a struggle for Honved as they took on the might of Anzhi in Budapest as they were thumped 4-0 to crash out of the Europa League.
It was former Barcelona striker, Samuel Eto’o who ended the contest last night after just 7 minutes to grab a vital away goal.
Honved however didn’t back down, and created many chances in a first half that they almost dominated. The breakthrough didn’t come for the Budapest side, and in the second half things took a turn for the worse as Lacina Traore added to the misery to make it 2-0 to the Russians.
Shatov made it 3-0 with 20 minutes remaining before Eto’o again grabbed a second to end the tie over two legs, Anzhi 5-0 Honved.
Videoton 0-0 Slovan Bratislava (Agg: 1-1 – Videoton win on away goals)
Sousa got his tactics spot on in Szekesfehervar to set up Videoton with a stiff tie with Belgium side, Gent.
It was a game of very few chances with Videoton creating the better opportunites in a very tight first half.
Sousa’s men sat deep for most of the game soaking up Slovan pressure comfortably before a barrage in the last 10 minutes.
Luksik came closest for the visitors, but his long drive was saved well by Bozovic. Videoton had chances to sew the game up late on but Gyurcso’s shot was wasteful.
But matter it did not as Videoton nervously plodded into the next round to the delight of their fans and manager.
