Hungary vs Moldova – Preview

Written by Peti Simon

Hungary look to take 3 points from Moldova come September 6th, which may not be as an easy task as it may seem on paper.

Just by looking at the teams, their FIFA rankings, and their current standings in group E, you would think Hungary were clear favourites to win.  True, they are favourites but the game will be tough nonetheless.

Here’s the group standings:

Moldova, as you can see, sit in 5th place with only 6 points from 7 games.  Their qualification so far has been up and down, playing some good games – 2-0 win vs Finland – and also some tough loses like 2-1 to Hungary and Sweden, and also a 0-1 loss to Holland.  They’ve also been poor at times, losing to Finland and Sweden 4-1.  So it’ll be a matter of which Moldova team turns up on Tuesday.

Hungary, on the other hand, have had a great campaign compared to to previous efforts, so far and are looking to build on that with a win over Moldova on Tuesday.  So far The Magyars have lost 3 games in 8, 2 to World Cup Finalists Holland and the other to Sweden in Stockholm.  The other games have all been wins, including notable victories like the one in Finland – scoring the winner in the 94th minute, an 8-0 win vs San Marino which really showcased the firepower and team play, and the latest victory over Sweden – which was an immense win for not only the team but for the nation as well.

The last time these two teams met, Hungary squeezed out the win on home soil winning 2-1 with goals coming from Rudolf and Koman, and Suvorov for Moldova.  Both of Hungary’s goals came from low shots outside of the box.  Suvorov’s goal from sloppy defending and a bit of bad luck which Suvorov was ultimately able to take advantage of.

Highlights:

Keys to victory for Hungary:

Keep doing what they’ve been doing lately.  It seems like every time I see these boys play, they’ve improved. I don’t foresee any serious changes in the starting line up by Egervári, possibly he will play only 1 defensive midfield, allowing one more attacking player in the midfield.  Hungary will also welcome back their best defender, Juhasz, and it will be curious to see who will be his centre-back partner. Korcsmár, who really impressed vs Sweden? Or the more experienced, solid Vanczak? In terms of playing style, I’d like to see a quick passing game from Hungary, with lots of shots on the goal since Moldova’s goal keepers have been very shaky lately.  The one thing t need to look out for are Moldova’s dangerous counter attacks as they are a speedy team.

Players to watch out for:

Moldova:  Alexandr Suvorov – Moldova’s striker, currently has 3 goals in this qualifying campaign, scoring against Finland, Sweden, and Hungary.  He was a threat the last time the teams played and I expect him to be a nuisance once again.

Hungary:  Gergely Rudolf – Hungary’s striker who currently has 5 goals in this qualifying campaign, with his latest goal coming in the 90th minute vs Sweden from a superb cross from Priskin.  He was also MoM vs Sweden and also provided an assist in that game.
